Watched for Vol: Cheers last night at Cohen
Sid Griffin shows off his class and taste in this solo recital.
Performance built by upon the cult songs of his long career
A Solo performance at Cohen by Sid Griffin, a complete musician with almost forty years of high level experience behind him. Added value, is his parallel critical and historical knowledge of rock, with culture and perspective that also comes through in his live set.
Add to this communication, humour and the nice predisposition not to take himself too seriously and the set in the local Via Scarsellini is the result and has depth as well as very enjoyable.
For this solo tour, Sid has drawn from all his multifaceted background of influences and loves, proposing pieces from his two fundamental groups, The Long Ryders and The Coal Porters (Roots, Folk Rock, Alternative Bluegrass) but also a series of tributes, recalls and quotes, from the blues rock of Jimmy Reed, the sixties perfumed punk rock of The Flamin Groovies to the Ramones and the venues namesake, Leonard Cohen (A beautiful, personal version of ‘Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye’, also paying respects to the local Elena Castagnoli), Greg Trooper (“Everywhere”).
And above all the joyful and emblematic encore: “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”, with which Griffin celebrates in one fell swoop his fundamental ties with Dylan, The Band and The Byrds. It is no coincidence that he wrote the rich booklet included in the box of six CDs on the “Complete Basement Tapes”, a true mine for the American music of the roots, that of the so-called “invisible republic”.
A concert to remember.
